Dr. Peters obtained a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing from Barry University in Florida, then worked as a psychiatric nurse for about four years before going on to medical school. Dr. Peters graduated from the University of Miami School of Medicine, and then trained in adult/general psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center in North Carolina. She returned to Miami to complete her medical education with two years of child and adolescent psychiatry training at the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital. She is board-certified in General Psychiatry as well as Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, and is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association.
Dr. Peters is on the Voluntary Faculty in the Department of Psychiatry at Florida International University. She has provided numerous trainings on psychiatric illnesses, medication treatments and child sexual abuse for groups of therapists and the general public at organizations such as Lamplighters Aglow, Broward First Call for Help, the Southeast Florida Association for Psychoanalytic Psychology, the Association of Black Psychologists, the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation and the West Palm Beach Mental Health Association. She is active in the Florida-based National Association of The Bahamas, and is particularly concerned about issues of mental health that affect the minority community.
